Spiced Pears

Spiced Pears Got too many pears in this week's fruit bag? Here's a great, simple way of using them up.

Goes beautifully with goats' cheese or Camembert...

It's great for entertaining, because you can prepare it up to 2 days ahead and keep it in a sealed container in the fridge.

Ingredients

Serves 4

4-6 ripe pears
100ml red wine
1/2 cinnamon stick (or 1 tsp ground cinnamon)
1 tsp ground mixed spice
50g sugar

Method

  1. Peel the pears. Cut them into quarters and remove the core and stalk.

  2. Gently heat the wine, sugar and spices in a pan until the sugar has dissolved.

  3. Add the pears, cover and heat gently for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  4. Remove the pears and put them in a bowl. Simmer the remaining liquid for up to 10 minutes, until it has thickened into a syrup. Pour over the pears.

  5. Pour the syrup over the pears and allow to cool for a couple of hours.

  6. Serve cold or warm with creme fraiche, or as an accompaniment to goats' cheese, Camembert or Brie with salad.

Makes a delicious starter.

Time From Cupboard-To-Table

About 3 hours, allowing for cooling time.

About 10 minutes' actual preparation time.

Notes & Variations

For kids, use a dark fruit juice, such as blackcurrent (or pureed blackberries), instead of the wine.
