Press Release - 28th September 2006

Nominations Now Open For 2006 Veg Box Scheme Awards

Box schemes providers are the unsung heroes of the local food economy.

It's been a tough year for them. Harvests are down due to the weather and two of the Big Four supermarkets have announced they're launching their own veg box schemes.

The 2006 Veg Box Scheme Awards aims to recognise the hard work put in by those who run veg box delivery services, as well as encouraging best practise within the industry.

Sponsored by, the awards celebrate the achievement of those running box schemes.

"There's much more to running a box scheme than filling cardboard boxes with vegetables and delivering them round the neighbourhood," says Clare Josa of Veg Box Recipes.

"It takes planning, commitment and enthusiasm, even at times when the rest of us would rather be lounging in the sun or cosy by the fire. That's why we're running the 2006 Veg Box Scheme Awards. We're looking for the best (and the worst!) of the bunch."

Box scheme providers will be rated on quality, flexibility, variety, service and value for money.

Voters also get to say what their veg box scheme is doing well and what they could do to improve.

Vegetable box customers can have their say at, by filling in a simple online form.

Nominations close on 31st December 2006.

The winners will be announced in January 2007 and will be formally presented with their award.

This will entitle them to use the "2006 Veg Box Scheme Awards - Winner" logo, to publicise their success.

Notes to editor - about

Over 50% of people who give up on their veg box scheme do so because they don't know how to cook the vegetables they receive. aims to solve this problem by providing veg-box-friendly recipes that make it easy to use even obscure veg box ingredients.

The recipes use seasonal food, with a strong UK-grown bias.

Veg box schemes support the local food economy and reduce the burden on the environment, as well as providing fresher, more local food than supermarkets. Our research shows that subscribing to a box scheme improves your diet, by increasing the amount of vegetables you eat and getting them to you while they're still fresh and full of nutrients.
